Hotaru no Hikari / ホタルノヒカリ

10-episode, Manga-turned-Anime-turned-romantic comedy / drama from Japan that aired July 11 to September 12 back in 2007.

A friend from Korea recommended this one, and I'm really grateful to her for it, too!

This was the sweetest thing I've seen in a long time, and it left me with that warm & fuzzy feeling on the inside.

The chemistry between the two leads: Ayase Haruka as Amemiya Hotaru, and Fujiki Naohito as Takano Seiichi was spectacular!

It's the story of a young woman who works as an assistant at an up & coming design firm.

She's very pretty, but painfully shy & woefully unskilled at human interaction.

She rented a charming house and spends her nights there on the porch in sweats, drinking beer from a can, and neglecting her housework.

She's also prone to talking to herself or the critters that wander onto the property.

Her manager,Takano Seiichi, is in the midst of a marriage break-up, so he decides to return to his father's house, and he is shocked at the filthy mess, but more so when he finds Amemiya lying asleep on the porch under some newspapers.

The odd-couple thing ensues since both refuse to leave the house.
Seiichi is fastidious and uptight while Amemiya is laid-back & reckless.

It's a predictable story, but not in a way that would make anyone want to tune out.

Shortly after Seiichi and Amemiya start living together (with a host of rules made up by Seiichi that are pretty funny), Amemiya meets and falls deeply in love (for the first time) with her Prince Charming, who kisses her on a whim when he sees her asleep in a wicker chair that he designed.

This is supposed to give the impression that Amemiya has been asleep for too long and needs to awaken to reality.

The guy she's crazy about is Teshima Makoto (Kato Kazuki), and he's just as unsure about his love-side as Amemiya.

They both fall in love at first sight, and since it is the summertime, then why not pursue?

The way that Amemiya backs away from difficult and/or uncomfortable situations is hilarious, but according to Makoto, it's what endears him to her all the more.

When he finds out that she wears sweats and drinks beer from a can, he shrugs it off by admitting to his worried colleagues that he has two, older sisters who do the same thing.

Amemiya at first doesn't feel worthy of a guy as fine as Makoto, and besides that, a co-worker with appearance, brains, and charm also has her sights set on the guy, so it seems hopeless --

She consults Seiichi nightly for advice, and he is quite helpful, but in a sarcastic, authoritative way that helps to lend itself to their on-fire enchantment.

Seiichi refers to her as a Himono-onna (dried up woman).
He insists that there isn't a man alive who would take an interest in her since she's slovenly and has embarrassing traits.

At one point in the drama, while she's lying on the porch in agony over what to do about Makoto, Seiichi catches her scratching her ass, and the look on his face is priceless.

Still, he continues to help her at every turn while also having to deal with his own issues as well as to try desperately to keep their living arrangement from becoming public knowledge at the office.

Amemiya and Makoto get together eventually ~~

but to say anything more would be to ruin it for those who have yet to watch the drama.

Himono-Onna describes me entirely.

When I'm at work, I'm dressed nice, have make-up on, and make damn sure my hair is fly.

When I get home, it's another thing entirely.

Sweats are the norm, my hair up in a ponytail is a must, and though I'm allergic to beer, I go through bottle after bottle of water, or diet coke from the fountain.
And yes, I even talk to myself on occasion as well.
When I had a cat, I talked to him, too!

Unlike Amemiya, I don't work for a spectacular company under the loving guidance of a super-fine boss like Seiichi, and I've yet to hear in my head the sage advice of a gifted screen writer, telling me what to do or say at any, given moment.

I never had any friends like her, either

Incredibly gorgeous men had always rendered me speechless, dumbfounded, and retarded.

Fujiki Nahohito as Seiichi

and even the ones I'm not, entirely sure about when it comes to looks, they still managed to rob me of my ability to be myself

Kato Kazuki as Teshima Makoto

Like Amemiya, I never felt like I was 'worthy' enough for a guy like Fujiki, and it probably showed, which was why they never, bothered to get to know me any better.

I had a few, serious crushes on some totally hot guys, and not even my best friend knew about them!

I was pretty, but weird.
I was likable, but too hard to approach.
I was always invited to parties & such, but eventually it stopped when it became apparent that I would likely chicken out at the last second and stay home instead.

Now that it's too late to matter, and because I never had what Amemiya had, I can only look back with deep regret.

All I can do now is encourage the shy kids in my class to get over themselves much sooner than I could, and to find the courage to go out on a limb once in awhile, just because.

Now for The Kawaii Aspect of Hotaru no Hikari

I so adored the opening credits video to this drama!

I can't find it anywhere, and I don't know how to record off my PC.

The animation, the color, ... it's really pretty, and so is the song: Yokogao by Aiko

I have no idea what this is, but I so want one!

pretty wind chime

The scenery was nothing spectacular, but the interiors captivated me enough to want to show them off here.

cool bar background

very pretty fish tank at another bar

awesome overhead decorations at yet, another bar

close-up view

I want to live here!

Kamisama Mou Sukoshi Dake

I can say without reservation or regret that this was the WORST drama I've ever seen come out of Japan.
I'm disappointed and appalled.
I know it's another oldie, but I've heard and read about it for years now, and because it stars Kaneshiro Takashi, I decided to finally give Kamisama Mou Sukoshi Dake (God, Give Me More Time) a try.

When it was finally over, I typed a response on the AZNV.tv site, and it read simply: gag.

Kamisama is a 1998 release about a composer, Ishikawa Keigo (played by Kaneshiro), who gives up on life after his girlfriend dies trying to give birth to his child.

Six years later, he meets the co-star, Kano Masaki (played by Fukada Kyoko), an irritating and completely self-absorbed girl who resorts to prostitution in order to obtain concert tickets.
She contracts HIV as a result, and then she proceeds to take Keigo down with her ~ and everyone else in her life.

I suppose the real crime here is the rest of the world's disbelief in hell.

Everything is rosy & light, with pinwheels and rainbows, and with happy tunes in your head while skipping merrily through life while sucking on a lollipop.

It's immature, it's gay, and it's a dangerous way to blithely decide you're going to make your way through real life.

Masaki was a high school bitch who walked over her inferiors, thought that her shit didn't stink, and who cared about herself more than anyone else in the world.
Then she makes a totally ignorant decision to do the wrong thing, and for the next, 11 episodes we're supposed to go through a box of tissues feeling sorry for her?

GAG

I couldn't wait for her to kick off after the 2nd episode.

She treated her mother like dirt, talked down to her father, cared less about how her own brother would be treated by his peers, and she even dragged her idol, Keigo, into her sh*t by whining and crying like a baby every time things got rough.
Through the 12 episodes, she never once asked about him, his life, his past, his feelings ... nothing. It was always about her, how she felt, what she was thinking ...

ENOUGH already. My God, how pathetic can one human be?

THEN she has the audacity to get pregnant.

That was when I wanted to stop watching Kamisama, but I couldn't.
I'd gone that far, so I had to go all the way.
AGAIN, she didn't give a flying fack about her so-called love when he wanted to have sex with her.
She vaguely said it was wrong, but that was it.
It was as if she wanted him to contract the disease as much as he thought that he wanted to do.
He had issues to deal with, and she cared less.

He was suffering immeasurable pain, and she cared only to add to it with her own ignorance and selfishness.

I can't BREATHE anymore.

Now we have a shattered family, a destroyed music career, and a new life to think about.
WE do, not Miss Masaki, who to the bitter end refused to let go of herself and think about someone else.

Thank God she faded away, thank God the baby and Keigo didn't get her disease, and thank God this isn't reality.

Or, is it?

As I watched this incredibly annoying drama, I began to see things differently.
It came out in 1998, which was about the time when these programs started to pick up steam, so I guess the major hype about Kamisama had to do with Kaneshiro being the star, but also that it set a precedent with young, sappy girls in Asia.
This is where Kawaii and foolishness come into play.
Instead of leaving the sickeningly sweet sentimentality on the playground, where it belongs, it somehow took over the nations of Japan, Korea, and Taiwan like a deathly plague.

Second, it was subbed in the first episode by Nippon Golden Network, and then for whatever reason, SARS came into play.
By far, the WORST on the planet when it comes to subbing efforts.

That and the ridiculous story aside, Kaneshiro gave a superb performance as usual.
HE was the only reason I continued to watch Kamisama, and I'm beyond relieved to know that he's starred in some much, higher caliber films since 1998, too.

And, this poor guy ... Kato Haruhiko.
He was Masaki's first love, or to her, a person to use, abuse, and take for granted as she stomped her way through life. I liken him to the precious piece of artwork in a beautiful crystal shop, and Masaki is the bull that comes crashing through the storefront window, knocking down and destroying everything in her path.

Poor, sweet fellow. He also starred in Over Time, and he played another neglected soul, but who ends up on the good end of the stick this time.

Alas, if this movie was meant to convey the fact that people do make mistakes, but that they needn't have to suffer as a result, then Kamisama missed the mark by a few miles.

IF Masaki had truly repented, IF she had been honest with herself, and IF she learned from her mistake, changing her caustic and self-absorbed ways once and for all, I think this drama would have been more interesting and beneficial.
Unfortunately, it did none of these things.
It concentrated too much on her spoiled, willful side, and it tried to force me to take pity on her, which I refused and will always refuse to do with anyone who cannot see the forest for the trees.

Wake up and smell the damn coffee already!

Kodoku no Kake / 孤独の賭け

This was a Japanese drama that I purchased online through Amazon.com, and which came as a special bonus on Christmas Eve, along with the Laurel CD that I also ordered.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ME!

Before I even watched Kodoku no Kake, I knew that I'd like it because it stars one of my all-time FAVORITE actors, Hideaki Ito.

sigh ... drool ... moan ... dream-on
S.E.X. gOD!!!

Anyway, after the holiday travel, I returned home and watched my DVD.

This is what I found ...

Turns out the subtitles were created by a Chinese person translating Japanese to English.

YAH! That makes WAAAY sense, huh?

So AGAIN I got burned ordering a DVD online.
It was $30 I could have used on anything else, TRUST me.
Still, I can't find many of his movies or dramas online, so for $30, I got to stare at him for three days (the amount of time it took me to watch the entire drama), AND, I got to capture a ton, more of his awesome images for my bulging ITO HIDEAKI pics folder!

He was exceptionally sexy in Kodoku no Kake because of his super-hot LONG HAIR!

The title theme, Kodoku no Kakera is sung by Angela Aki, and though to me she appears frumpy in street wear & nerd glasses, she possesses a beautiful voice.

The drama is about a young, successful businessman with a huge chip on his shoulder who is out to destroy everyone with the billions that he's made after climbing from the depths of poverty & despair.

KnK also stars Sakai Masato 堺雅人, whom I thought to be really cute, always grinning (especially his laughing eyes).

speaking of horrible subtitles ...

Here is the rest of the cast, in case you are interested ...

I enjoyed the mature theme, the mature content, and (thank you!) the mature ACTORS!
Not into the sappy, sweet, ditzy, airhead, bubble-gum chewing, kawaii sh*t that has inundated this market AT ALL.

Ito's character, Chigusa Teijiro, had a lot of sex at the beginning of this drama.

He's leaving a bar one evening when Inui Momoko (Hasegawa Kyoko) falls in front of his car and Chigusa gets out to see if she is ok.
We find out a lot later in the drama that he recognized her almost immediately as a character from his past; the daughter of the man who ruined his father.

Momoko has revenge on her mind too, though.
She believes that it was her uncle who ruined her life and caused her father to commit suicide.
Her older brother hung himself when he failed a college entrance exam, and since their mother was counting on him to raise the family back up in social status, she decided to set the house on fire.

Sakai's character ran into the house, and after getting his leg crushed by a falling china cabinet, he managed to drag a young Momoko from the burning home, saving her but gaining a bum leg in the process.

Sakai's Makita Jiro character takes over as the big-brother in Momoko's life, though he's crazy in love with her.
He lectures at a local university, but he always manages to find time to check in on Momoko and make sure that she isn't trying to ruin her own life any time soon.

Anyway, Momoko recognizes the gorgeous Chigusa from an earlier television broadcast about his latest business venture in America, and she tells him that she wants a boat-load of cash to compensate for the accident with the car.
She offers her body in exchange, too.

Momoko is a budding fashion designer who wants to make enough money to buy back the home she thinks that her uncle stole from her parents.

Jiro is naturally disappointed after Momoko tells him about the sex for $$$ deal that she made with Chigusa, but the smiling gimp only encourages her to change her mind before it's too late.

Lots of twists & turns in this drama, but again, to me the best part was getting to stare at my lusciously sexy Hideaki for three days straight.

I absolutely adored this necklace!

His apartment was pretty sweet, too.

I SO love Japanese cherry tree blossoms!

This guy was scary ...

He TOTALLY ruined the ending for me!!!

I'll leave you with what I can find of the WORST of the subtitles.

??? Is that even a number ???

??????????

s-s-s-say WHAT???

eeeeeeeeeew!

um ... WHAAAT???
